After the Zunyi Conference, Mao Zedong (played by Gu Yue) confirmed his leadership position in the Red Army. In January 1935, during the wettest and coldest season in the south, the Red Army arrived by the Chishui River after a long journey. Surrounded by the enemy, Mao Zedong, along with Zhou Enlai (played by Su Lin) and Liu Bocheng (played by Fu Xuecheng), carefully analyzed the enemy situation and decided to cross the Chishui River into Yunnan. Upon learning that Chiang Kai-shek (played by Zhao Hengduo) had dispatched Wang Daozhi (played by Jin Ange) to encircle the Zhaixi area with 400,000 troops, the Red Army took advantage of the enemy's weak northern front and successfully crossed the river for a second time, seizing the ferry crossing. The Red Army launched a surprise attack on the Loushan Pass while the enemy was unprepared and marched towards Zunyi, liberating vast surrounding areas. Hearing this, Chiang Kai-shek was both angry and frustrated; he severely punished the military officers for their ineffectiveness and dispatched heavy reinforcements to pursue the Red Army, planning to eliminate them on the banks of the Wu River.
