Charles (Hugh Grant), despite being a frequent guest at weddings, harbors an inexplicable fear of marriage. At a country wedding, he falls head over heels for an American girl, Carrie (Andie MacDowell), and, disregarding his friends' gossip about her, spends a wonderful night with her. The next day, Carrie leaves for America, leaving Charles troubled. Two months later, they meet again at a wedding in London, but Carrie is preparing to marry someone else. However, under her initiative, they enjoy another romantic evening together. Another month passes, and Charles receives Carrie's wedding invitation. While selecting a gift, he runs into Carrie again, and she recounts her romantic escapades, making Charles want to propose to her. Dejected after attending Carrie’s wedding, he accepts the confession of a girl he doesn’t love. It isn’t until a certain funeral arrives that he decides to muster the courage to confess his feelings to Carrie, whom he encounters once more.
