Sam (played by Sean Penn), who works at Starbucks, is an adult but has the mental capacity of a 7-year-old. One day, he takes in a homeless woman. After she helps Sam have a daughter, she disappears without a trace. He names his daughter Lucy (played by Dakota Fanning), after his favorite Beatles song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds." He loves his child dearly. With Sam's attentive care, Lucy grows up slowly, realizing that her dad cannot understand slightly more complex stories. She refuses to grow up, wanting to be like her dad. Their life together is so happy. Regional education officials discover this special family and believe that Sam is unable to care for Lucy, so they take Lucy away. Heartbroken, Sam is determined to regain custody of Lucy, so he mistakenly seeks the best lawyer in the area...
