New prison officer Juan (played by Alberto Ammann) enters the prison a day early to demonstrate a good professional demeanor. On this day, the inmate leader "The Mother" injures a guard, leading the inmates to riot, and chaos ensues in the prison... Juan, injured, is abandoned by his colleagues in Cell 211. To avoid being taken hostage by the inmates, he must disguise himself as a criminal to gain "The Mother's" trust and attempt to find a way to escape. The inmates threaten the authorities with three ETA terrorists serving over a hundred years in prison, leveraging a prior agreement between the government and ETA. The prison and special operations team hesitate to take strong action, resulting in a stalemate. Meanwhile, media coverage of the prison riot triggers a chain reaction, and relatives rush to the prison for news, only to be beaten by the guards. Juan's pregnant wife is unfortunately injured, leading him to take drastic measures to ensure his escape and assist in resolving the situation... This film swept eight major awards at the 2009 Goya Awards in Spain, including Best Film, Director, and Actor.
