In the 1980s, China experienced its third baby boom, with many couples responding to the family planning policy by having only one child. Among them are middle-aged Beijing photographer Cao Depai (Li Xuejian) and his young and beautiful wife Duan Jinghua (Song Dandan), who form a happy family of three with their 5-year-old son Hanhan. Cao Depai is also about to reach a peak in his career, with an exhibition of his work in the planning stages. One day, Cao Depai receives a phone call asking him to go to a children's welfare institution to pick up his son, which leaves him puzzled. Upon arriving at the institution, he meets a silent boy in his early teens who has come to Beijing with a letter searching for his father; the letter is addressed to his ex-wife in Northeast China, which Cao wrote. He met his ex-wife while serving in the countryside, and she stayed there after their divorce. To uncover the truth, he takes the boy to Northeast China. Through the boy's stepfather, Cao Depai learns that his ex-wife has passed away, and at the time of their divorce, she was pregnant. This boy named Zhao Xiaomu (Ye Jing) is indeed his son. At a loss, Cao Depai initially thinks of leaving Xiaomu in Northeast China, but to his surprise, the boy follows him onto the train. After arriving in Beijing, Cao Depai arranges for Xiaomu to stay in the darkroom where he develops photos. Just as he struggles to explain everything to Duan Jinghua, she informs him that she is pregnant, and he seems to lose interest in the photography exhibition.
