During the Anti-Japanese War, there was a ragtag army composed of various people, known as the newly formed Third Regiment, led by the former county chief Duan Renyi (played by Lei Kesheng). To train this disorganized group, the Kuomintang sent two professional soldiers, Chief of Staff Fang Xianggong (played by Yuan Yuan) and Staff Officer Tan (played by Tan Zengwei), along with radio operator Bai Jiefen (played by Gongzhu) to maintain contact with higher-ups. Due to the chaotic composition of the troops, various disciplinary issues emerged, and progress was made after some rectification. With a formidable enemy approaching, the main force of the National Army retreated and ordered the New Third Regiment to stay and resist, with dire consequences. Outnumbered and outgunned, Fang Xianggong urgently requested reinforcements, but his superiors found excuses to ignore the plea. The New Third Regiment had to fight alone, suffering heavy casualties.
