In the vast mountains connected to the heavens, there is a Tibetan village that has relied on salt transportation for generations due to insufficient food production. The old leader Tani's son was supposed to be the next head of the village but tragically died on the salt transportation route. The widely supported successor Karma, in Tani's eyes, is a criminal who intentionally killed his son to seize the leadership position. On the eve of a new salt transportation journey, the village is divided into two factions led by Tani and Karma, each holding their ground. Ultimately, Karma leads the young people to set out ahead of the older generation based on an earlier divination date, while Tani guides his son, who is to become a lama, and his grandson along with a group of old followers on the divination date. The salt transportation teams not only face the challenges of rough travel but also unexpected dangers in the mountains. Which salt transportation team will overcome the obstacles and reach the destination first? This film features a rugged and beautiful visual style, with enchanting Tibetan mantras that resonate throughout, bringing a sense of tranquility. The film is a collaborative effort from France, Nepal, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, shot over a period of nine months and has been nominated for the 72nd Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film as well as the Best Cinematography at the 2000 European Film Awards. It won the César Award for Best Cinematography and Best Music that year.
