Late 1970s, a northern village in mainland China. On this day, the Chen family is celebrating the joyful wedding of Renwu (Ma Xiaowei) and Xue Shuilian (Wen Yujuan). Renwu’s sister-in-law, Wang Qiangying (Wang Shuqin), sees that the wedding arrangements and the new bride's outfit surpass what she had in her own wedding. She complains that her mother-in-law (Wang Yumei) is biased and argues with her husband Renwen to get Shuilian to wear a pair of polyester pants. After seeing her sister-in-law Renfang (Hong Xuemin) also has polyester pants (a gift from Renfang's boyfriend), she becomes convinced that her mother-in-law cares nothing for her, demanding equal treatment. The mother-in-law, feeling helpless, wants to borrow money to buy fabric to appease her daughter-in-law, and kind-hearted Shuilian offers her own money to help out. This is the first step in Qiangying's unreasonable behavior; she later makes attempts to break up Renfang and her boyfriend, forcibly seizes property during the division of the family estate, and mistreats their grandfather (Yu Shaokang) after the separation, which causes even the obedient Renwen to no longer endure her antics; yet this also marks the beginning of Shuilian being considerate and caring for the family.
