Makimura Sotaro (played by Tsuyoshi Kusanagi) is a novelist obsessed with science fiction. He quit his factory job in his early years to focus entirely on writing science fiction novels. Although the popularity of science fiction gradually waned in favor of romance novels, he willingly embraced solitude, persistently writing for his ideals. Sotaro's wife, Yoshiko (played by Yūko Takeuchi), deeply loves her somewhat clueless husband. During the day, she works hard at a bank, and at night and on holidays, she devotedly manages their ordinary home and takes care of Sotaro’s daily needs. One day, Yoshiko suddenly falls ill, and after a diagnosis, she learns that she has late-stage colon cancer and less than a year to live. Upon receiving this news, Sotaro resolves to write a short story for his wife every day to keep her spirits high. As the stories unfold, filled with joy and sorrow, they journey through over four years of life together... This film is based on the true story of writer Takashi Mayumura and his wife Yoshiko.
