Abel Applebaum is a once-promising teenage detective now a 31-year-old adult, dealing with dull, trivial cases and burdened by his initial identity. His parents are deeply concerned as Abel shows no interest in matters relevant to his peers—like financial stability and settling down. They can no longer force him to believe he is special and encourage him to abandon his ways. Ignoring their advice, Abel turns to alcohol to soothe his self-esteem. He works in an old-fashioned detective agency, where the walls are adorned with clippings needing frames to commemorate his past achievements. One day, a client arrives with an "adult" case—her boyfriend was stabbed to death weeks ago, apparently a victim of violent drugs. Caroline hopes the young detective can uncover who brutally murdered her boyfriend, restore his reputation, and bring the killer to justice.
