The U.S. Navy's submarine, Sea Tiger, is about to be decommissioned. Rear Admiral Sherman arrives early on the submarine to look through the logbook. As he reads his past entries, memories flood back. The General's thoughts are endless and whimsical...
At the beginning of the Pacific War, the U.S. Navy was retreating step by step in Southeast Asia. The Sea Tiger submarine was nearly sunk by Japanese planes in the harbor, and Captain Sherman (portrayed by Cary Grant) was tasked with completing in two weeks what would normally take two months — repairing the Sea Tiger, which had completely lost its navigation and combat capabilities, and retreating. However, the situation was tough, and the Sea Tiger could barely secure the most basic supplies.
Lieutenant Horton reported for duty and appeared to be a complete dandy in both appearance and behavior, lacking any knowledge of submarine operations. Captain Sherman felt another burden had been added to his troubles.
After volunteering, Lieutenant Horton took on the role of the Sea Tiger's supply officer. Unbeknownst to anyone, this was the position where he could truly shine. He managed the supply situation so well that the Sea Tiger soon set sail, while the base commander was busy investigating the theft of supplies from the base warehouses and his own office.
Lieutenant Horton was quite resourceful; although the submarine's engines weren't repaired when they set sail, he hired a local sorcerer to help the submarine smoothly leave the dock. When unable to find supplies at the next stop, he opened a casino allowing local soldiers to exchange base goods for chips. He was also a kind-hearted person, rewarding those who helped him find supplies. As a result, the Sea Tiger ended up with an imprisoned cook who had broken military law, a group of beautiful female doctors, the casino owner's plump wife, and a milking goat. Captain Sherman reluctantly accepted these odd additions due to Horton’s talent for sourcing supplies.
Once the beautiful female doctors boarded, Captain Sherman's troubles multiplied: crew members faked illnesses to enjoy their tender care; one of the female doctors was too "overwhelming," leading Captain Sherman to order that the men should disappear when the ladies needed to pass through the narrow corridors; and that same doctor accidentally pressed the torpedo launch button, causing a torpedo to miss an 8,000-ton Japanese tanker and crash into a truck on the beach instead...
The Sea Tiger needed anti-rust paint, but Lieutenant Horton could only find white and red paint, resulting in a pink submarine in the Pacific. Neither the Americans nor the Japanese were aware of such a submarine on their side and both ordered: upon discovery of the pink submarine, sink it immediately.
The Sea Tiger encountered an American warship and before they could greet each other, cannonballs were fired. Captain Sherman ordered an emergency dive, but he couldn't trick the warship into stopping its depth charges due to the sound of a crying newborn on board, which helped the warship's sonar pinpoint their location. In a critical situation, Lieutenant Horton suggested launching the female doctors' lingerie from the torpedo tube to the surface. This plan worked; when the warship's commander saw the bra, he concluded that Japanese women couldn't possibly have such large sizes.
The Sea Tiger was saved!
In the end, Lieutenant Horton became the captain of this “magical submarine.”
