Holly (Katherine Heigl) and Eric (Josh Duhamel) are set up by their mutual friends, the Novak couple, resulting in a disastrous first date. However, they at least get to know each other, leading to numerous humorous encounters whenever they find themselves at the same events. Tragically, a car accident claims the lives of the Novak couple, and when their lawyer reviews the will, he discovers that they have left the guardianship of their infant daughter, Sophie, to Holly and Eric jointly. Thus, this pair of adversaries ends up living under the same roof, taking on the responsibilities of co-parents. Initially, they can't stand each other, and their bickering becomes routine, even dragging in their respective flings to complicate matters.
