Ordinary citizen Liu Cheng (Liu Peiqi) takes his son Liu Xiaochun (Tang Yun), who has been playing the violin since childhood, from Jiangnan to Beijing in hopes of greatly improving his violin skills. They seek out the eccentric teacher Jiang (Wang Zhiwen) as their mentor, and during the learning process, Liu Xiaochun gradually becomes close friends with Jiang. The captivating Lily (Chen Hong) lives nearby and ignites an inexplicable love in Liu Xiaochun. Liu Cheng, having heard a brilliant performance by a young man by chance, visits his mentor Professor Yu (Chen Kaige) and convinces him to take Liu Xiaochun as his student.
