Agnes (Harriet Andersson), Maria (Liv Ullmann), and Karin (Ingrid Thulin) are three sisters, but each harbors deep-seated barriers and estrangement within themselves. Agnes is terminally ill and her life is coming to an end, with the maid Anna by her side. Agnes never received her mother’s complete love and in her dying days, she fantasizes about making her estranged sisters cherish one another, but her wishes repeatedly go unfulfilled. Maria is the most favored child of her mother, which incites jealousy among her sisters. Her romantic life is in disarray as she oscillates between her husband and her lover. The more love she possesses, the greedier she becomes. Karin’s life is filled with oppression. Her relationship with her husband has reached a deadlock, plunging her into self-destructive behavior. The desire for reconciliation feels too distant; they want to escape the shadows of their lives and reconnect with one another, but find that their estrangement seems unbreakable.
