In an alley in old Beijing, there resides the low-key master of calligraphy and painting, Qi Gong (played by Ma Enran), who lives a simple and peaceful life with his wife (played by Wang Fulai), treating each other with respect. However, in a turbulent era, small characters like him cannot remain uninvolved amidst the storm. Qi Gong, having Manchu ancestry, encounters many troubles during the tumultuous years of the Cultural Revolution.
