The story takes place in 19th century England, where Becky (played by Reese Witherspoon) is born into a poor family. However, driven by ambition, she dreams of rising to high society. To achieve this, Becky goes to the home of Sir Pitt Crawley (played by Bob Hoskins) to work as a governess. Intelligent and clever, Becky quickly earns the recognition and trust of her aunt Matilda (played by Eileen Atkins), after which she follows Matilda to the London she has always desired. In London, Becky reunites with her former friend Amelia (played by Romola Garai), who is deeply in love with the officer George (played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers) and is willing to betray her family to marry him. Meanwhile, Becky secretly enters into marriage with Rawdon (played by James Purefoy), the heir of the Crawley family. However, what awaits them is not a promising future, but rather the brutality of war.
