Young Gogol from India is reading a novel by Gogol on the train, and an elderly passenger suggests he travel abroad. Suddenly, the train has an accident... Surviving the disaster, Gogol goes to the U.S. for studies, and later, through family matchmaking, he marries a beautiful Indian girl named Ashima (played by Tabu). They move to America, but Ashima often struggles with homesickness. Gogol feels that his second life comes from Gogol himself, and thus names his first child after the great Russian writer. Time passes, and Gogol (played by Kal Penn) grows into a strong young man who doesn't understand his father's motivation behind his name. During a family trip back to India, Gogol determines his professional direction and becomes an architect while having a white girlfriend. In this family of first-generation Indian immigrants, each member faces cultural differences and their own identity... The film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Indian-American author Jhumpa Lahiri.
