British writer James Miller (played by William Shimell) comes to the Italian city of Tuscany to hold a lecture for his new work "Certified Copy." He discusses with readers the book's viewpoints: the debate about the authenticity of artistic creation is unnecessary, as replicas themselves are original works, and originals are derived from other works. A French woman who deals in antiques (played by Juliette Binoche) brings her 11-year-old son to the discussion, hoping to get a signature for a book she just bought. She leaves early due to her son feeling hungry, leaving behind a phone number. They encounter each other again at her antique shop, and they take a drive to the countryside to see something. She drives aimlessly with Miller, discussing the themes of the book, visiting museums, and talking about her rebellious son, while they argue along the way. In a café, the female owner mistakenly assumes Miller is the woman's husband and begins to discuss marriage with her. So, they go along with the misunderstanding, and Miller starts to play the role of the woman's husband, and they go on dates and visit a hotel. However, a copy is merely a replica, not the original; Miller ends the duplicity and leaves the countryside alone. Binoche won the Best Actress award at the 63rd Cannes Film Festival for her performance in this film.
