Matthias (played by Kevin Kline) inherits his father's house and comes to Paris, intending to sell it to alleviate his financial difficulties. However, when he arrives at his house, he encounters two strange women—Mathilde (played by Maggie Smith) and her daughter Chloé (played by Kristin Scott Thomas). It turns out that they were tenants of his father during his lifetime, and according to the law, if Matthias insists on selling the property, he must pay Mathilde rent on a monthly basis.
