More than a hundred years ago, the ancestors of the Lin family embarked on a long and arduous journey to Taiwan Island, where they settled down. In the early 20th century, two generations of the Lin family practiced medicine. The grandfather was proficient in traditional Chinese medicine, while his son Lin Hanmin specialized in Western surgical medicine. Hanmin worked at a clinic run by the Japanese physician Yaobai. One night, Hanmin's wife (played by Jiang Wenli) was about to give birth, but the operating doctor Yaobai was drunk and passed out. Left with no choice, Hanmin had to summon the courage to perform a cesarean section on his wife. On April 9, 1928, marking the 33rd year of Japanese occupation in Taiwan, the Lin family welcomed a new life. They were destined to experience countless joys and sorrows during this tumultuous era... This film commemorates the 58th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's Anti-Japanese War and the 58th anniversary of Taiwan's liberation, and it has won the Best Director Award at the 2004 Peking University Student Film Festival, the Best Film Music Award at the 2003 Golden Rooster Awards, and the Best Actress Award (Jiang Wenli) and Best Director Award at the 2004 Huabiao Awards.
