A lavish biopic about a conspiracy coup, based on a true story from 1930s France. The charming protagonist is a French citizen of Russian Jewish descent who was imprisoned for fraud, and after his release, he changed his name and continued to trick people, engaging in illegal speculative activities. He ultimately controlled the entire publishing industry, racetracks, political circles, and luxurious social venues in Paris. He was also a notorious gambler. When the scandal was exposed, many government officials were implicated and fell alongside him. He was forced to commit suicide during the pursuit. This event also revealed the insides and scandals of the French political scene, exacerbating internal factional struggles and leading to a severe political crisis that nearly toppled the French government. The film examines the human tendencies and mental state of people during an economically challenging, uncertain era through the story of a con artist who rose to prominence in high society through deceit and manipulation. It also includes content about Soviet exile Trotsky seeking asylum in France, creating a stark contrast with Staviski. The director aims to metaphorically illustrate the two extreme political orientations in France. Sondheim's music perfectly complements the visuals.
