The story begins in Tokyo in 1980, where Sasagawa Ayako (played by Yuki Miyo) is a transfer student from Tokyo living in Okayama. Due to her strong accent, Ayako has never been able to fit in smoothly with her class, and her classmates have given her the nickname "Weird Sasagawa" because of it. The only person who can soothe Ayako's feelings is her boyfriend, Hideo (played by Yano Masato), and the art-loving Ayako turns their little love story into a comic. Coincidentally, this comic is read by the popular girl in class, Akimoto Takumi (played by Adachi Rika), who loves the plot, leading to a deep friendship between Takumi and Ayako. One day, after a fierce argument, Ayako and Hideo break up, plunging Ayako into a low point in her life.
