In the 1930s Shanghai, at the Shunhe Cotton Mill, female worker Su Fen (played by Bai Yang) marries Zhang Zhongliang (played by Tao Jin), a teacher from a women's tutoring school. On July 7, 1937, Su Fen gives birth to a son. Shortly after naming him Kang Sheng, Zhongliang joins a rescue team and leaves Shanghai, managing to survive the Nanking Massacre with his quick wit. In 1938, Zhongliang's mother (played by Wu Yin) takes Su Fen and Kang Sheng back to the countryside of Danyang. However, the countryside is also not peaceful; Zhongliang's brother Zhongmin (played by Gao Zheng) refuses to be a traitor and takes to guerrilla warfare in the mountains. In 1940, the invaders hang Zhongliang's father. Su Fen has no choice but to return to Shanghai with her son, supported by her longing and hope for Zhongliang, struggling to survive amidst suffering. In 1941, after being captured and successfully escaping, Zhongliang makes his way to Chongqing, where he has to rely on an old friend, Wang Lizhen (played by Shu Xiuwen), and slowly succumbs to the temptations of a corrupt material life, beginning to lose himself. In 1945, following Japan's surrender, Zhongliang and Lizhen return to Shanghai, moving into the home of Lizhen's cousin He Wenyuan (played by Shangguan Yunzhu). Just as Zhongliang is mingling with Wenyuan, Su Fen, left with no options, inadvertently gets recruited as a maid in Wenyuan's household...
