The reformed scoundrel Chan Tsz-fai (played by Tony Leung) bids farewell to his girlfriend (played by Carina Lau) before going to work out of town. The village chief's son, Kwan, and his girlfriend, Lin, are playing in the jungle when Kwan, driven by lust, severely injures Lin and flees in a panic. After parting with Ling, Fai trips while passing through the jungle. It turns out that when Lin was unconscious, Fai's attempt to help her was misinterpreted by the villagers, who mistakenly believe he is the killer. Fai is taken back to assist in the investigation, and to protect Ling, he gives a misleading statement. Lawyer Wu goes to bail Fai out, only to receive news of Lin's death. Fai is charged with murder, and Wu seeks out lawyer Cheung (played by Cheung Kwok-keung) to represent him.
