Ruth (played by Felicity Jones) aspires to become a lawyer and works hard to gain admission to Harvard Law School. While in law school, Ruth faces discrimination and pressure from various sides due to her gender, with only her husband Martin (played by Armie Hammer) steadfastly supporting her choice, understanding that Ruth is full of talent and a sense of justice. After Martin is diagnosed with cancer and recovers, he takes the children to New York for work. In order to live with her family, Ruth requests to transfer to Columbia University to complete her studies but is denied. Subsequently, Ruth leaves Harvard and becomes a law professor at Rutgers University, yet despite her excellence, no law firm is willing to hire her simply because she is a woman.
