After the death of his alcoholic father, Jonathan Bridge steals his father's ashes from his brother's house. He drives a stolen car towards a cliff, intending to commit suicide, but survives. After this, he undergoes three months of treatment in a psychiatric hospital. There, under the supervision of Dr. Figure, he joins a suicide group. He becomes friends with the troubled Rachel Roe (who saw her mother die in a car accident) and Toby (who accidentally killed his brother in a car accident). Throughout the treatment, the sarcastic Jonathan changes his behavior and realizes the importance of living.
