Liz (played by Jennifer Beals) has long struggled with mental illness and was recently hospitalized due to a mental breakdown; she has just been discharged. Besides her mental anguish, Liz's relationships with her son and husband are also strained. Her son is in a rebellious phase, exuding an aura that says "stay away," while her husband, who has dreamt of being a musician, has not had any income for a long time. At this overwhelming moment for Liz, a girl named Cathleen (played by Katherine McNamara) knocks on the door of Liz's home, claiming to be the illegitimate daughter of Liz's husband and his former lover. By an unexpected turn of events, Liz reluctantly takes in the girl. As time goes on, Liz begins to suspect what the girl really wants.
