<Eolomea> is a 1972 East German/Soviet/Bulgarian co-produced science fiction film, adapted from the novel of the same name by East German writer Angel Wagenstein. Eight spaceships disappear simultaneously for three days, and the Margot space station suddenly loses radio contact. Professor Maria and the Space Council are forced to issue a ban on all spacecraft leaving Earth until the cause of the incident is determined. But a mysterious "Eolomea project" gradually comes to light, and signals from Cygnus lead people in unknown directions. Film Review: <Eolomea> is an impressive and tightly-paced sci-fi work that boldly employs non-linear storytelling, with various narrative threads intertwined and ultimately converging. The film invests heavily in its sets, costumes, and soundtrack, creating a believable utopian scene of space travel. The performances by the actors, from Russia, East Germany, and Bulgaria, are also top-notch, with well-rounded character portrayals. Especially noteworthy is the German actress playing the lead role, who has many captivating and beautiful moments on screen. The film also presents many thought-provoking "ultimate questions" worth discussing, such as the relationship between individual fate and organizations; the question of humanity's ultimate mission; the relationship between bureaucratic constraints and ideals; the morality and obedience of robots, and more.
