Benedict Cumberbatch plays Julian Paul Assange, the founder of "WikiLeaks." WikiLeaks is a large document leaking and analysis website that caused a stir in 2010 by publishing as many as 92,000 classified U.S. military documents related to the war in Afghanistan. Cumberbatch's character, Julian Paul Assange, is the director and spokesperson for the website, who majored in physics and mathematics and has worked as a programmer and hacker. Both Assange and the website are highly controversial; he has received multiple honors for his decryption work and has also been the subject of an arrest warrant from Interpol. In 2010, Assange was wanted in Sweden for allegedly raping and sexually assaulting two women. He surrendered to London police on December 7, 2010, and was subsequently remanded to Westminster Magistrates' Court for an extradition hearing, with his bail application denied. On August 16, 2012, Assange was granted political asylum by Ecuador.
