The sudden departure of her husband plunges Roberta (Meryl Streep) into deep anguish. Like most housewives, Roberta's entire world revolves around her husband and family, both of which have now shattered. How is Roberta, who is not young anymore, to cope? Despite her sorrow, life must go on. With two children to care for, Roberta moves to East Harlem in New York, where she revitalizes her life by becoming a violin teacher. Roberta firmly believes that art can enrich a person's soul, and even children who have never been exposed to art will resonate with the beautiful sounds of the violin. However, the leaders of the school where Roberta teaches do not share this belief, as they continually cut her educational funding. Nevertheless, this does not shake Roberta's determination.
