In the final years of French colonial rule in Vietnam, French aristocrat Éléna (played by Catherine Deneuve) manages a rubber plantation in southern Vietnam. She adopts the orphaned Vietnamese princess Camille (played by Linh Dan Pham), and they live together. Éléna falls in love with a young Vietnamese colonial Navy officer, Jean-Baptiste (played by Vincent Perez), but later, Jean falls in love with Camille. Camille vows to marry Jean and runs away from home to follow him to Dragon Island in northern Vietnam. On their way, Camille accidentally kills a French officer and is pursued, leading the two to go on the run. Along the way, they have a son, Étienne, but they are eventually captured, and their son is placed in Éléna's care. Jean refuses to return home for trial and tragically takes his own life; Camille is released from prison due to a general amnesty, and when Éléna goes to bring her home, Camille leaves without hesitation and becomes a staunch member of the Vietnamese nationalist communist party. Years later, when Étienne sees his mother again, now a member of the Vietnamese delegation in the Geneva negotiations, their relationship has grown distant. This film won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film at the 65th Academy Awards.
