In this drama, a poor woman raises her son amidst many hardships. But no matter how hard she struggles, she remains steadfast in her moral principles. The film begins with the completion of a canal in a village set in the present day. Radha (Nargis), as the mother of the village, is asked to open the canal, recalling her early days of marriage, reflecting India's new independence. Radha's wedding to Shamu (Raaj Kumar) was financed by her mother-in-law, who took a loan from the moneylender Sukhilala. This event set off a spiral of poverty and suffering that Radha endures. The conditions of the loan are contentious, but the village elders decide to support the moneylender, after which Shamu and Radha are forced to pay three-quarters of their crops as interest on the 500 rupees loan. In an attempt to utilize more land to alleviate poverty, Shamu's arm is crushed by a boulder. He feels ashamed of his helplessness and ashamed for the others in the village. Feeling useless to his family, he leaves and never returns. Soon afterward, Radha’s mother-in-law passes away. Radha continues on…
