The story takes place in England in 1817, where a strangely dressed woman appears in a small town. No one knows where she came from or who she is. The kind Mrs. Worrell takes in the homeless woman and begins to speculate about her true identity based on her various actions. Eventually, people believe that this woman is a princess who has escaped from a distant ancient kingdom in the East and they name her Princess Calab (played by Phoebe Cates). Calab has never clearly denied this identity. As Princess Calab's fame grows, it attracts the attention of the reporter Guchy, and even the Regent is captivated by her beauty and intelligence. Gradually, everyone starts to become confused about whether this woman is truly a noble princess or just a clever con artist.
