The prostitute Cabiria (played by Giulietta Masina) has always dreamed of living a sweet and stable life with her lover. However, her innocent kindness leads her to be conned by her boyfriend, who robs her of all her money and pushes her into a river, nearly drowning her. Despite such humiliation, she remains hopeful about love. One day, she encounters a male actor who just had a fight with his girlfriend and is invited to spend the night at his home. Just as she is taken aback and filled with joy, the actor's girlfriend arrives to reconcile, leaving Cabiria heartbroken again. Soon, she is pursued madly by a handsome man at the theater; initially, she feels insecure, but ultimately accepts his marriage proposal and sells all her possessions to prepare for a beautiful new life with her fiancé. However, on the way, her fiancé reveals his true nature as a con artist, stealing her money and nearly causing her death. Left with nothing, Cabiria cries out in despair. She wanders alone on the street when a lively group of men and women pass by, singing joyfully; the cheerful atmosphere inspires Cabiria, and a signature smile returns to her face. The film won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film at the 30th Academy Awards and the Best Actress award at the 10th Cannes Film Festival.
