In 1950s America, a young woman named Therese ( Rooney Mara ) works as a salesgirl in a New York department store, but she yearns to be a photographer. One day, a beautiful and elegant blonde, Carol ( Cate Blanchett ), comes to the department store to buy Christmas gifts, and she and Therese feel an immediate connection. After getting to know each other, Therese learns that Carol has a daughter and is in the process of divorcing her husband, Harge ( Kyle Chandler ). Through letters, dates, and a road trip, Therese and Carol discover that they are each other's true love, but this is not accepted in their society at that time. Therese's boyfriend believes she is just confused, while Carol's husband hires a private detective to gather evidence, hoping to leave her with nothing in the divorce proceedings. The moment of testing for the two women finally arrives: under societal pressure, can they stay true to their hearts and pursue their love at any cost? "Carol" is the latest film by renowned American independent director Todd Haynes, nominated for the main competition at the 68th Cannes Film Festival, winning Best Actress. The film is adapted from Patricia Highsmith's 1952 novella "The Price of Salt," published anonymously, and due to its sensitive subject matter, the publisher initially refused to release it. It is called "The Price of Salt" because in the 17th century, "salt" had another meaning relating to women's desires. In this book, it metaphorically reflects the women's predicament: a life without love is like meat without salt. So, how much are you willing to pay for this love?
