The film depicts the controversial gay writer Capote's journey in writing the novel "In Cold Blood," delving deeply into Capote's sensitive and cruel inner world. The protagonist of the novel is based on Perry (Clifton Collins Jr.), a brutal killer who murdered a family of four for a mere $100 in 1959 America. Sensitive Capote (Philip Seymour Hoffman) senses the journalistic value of this news story. With the help of a magazine, he travels to the crime scene to investigate everything about the killer, as a piece of narrative nonfiction brews in Capote's mind, along with his desire for fame and success. However, when he engages in long interviews with Perry, he discovers the astonishing similarities between himself and this killer. Perry sees Capote as a confidant, continuously placing his hope in him. Yet, in Capote's heart, Perry can only take a back seat to his work, to his fame and fortune. Perry becomes a pawn in the hands of someone he deeply trusts, while Capote, after achieving fame with his work, can never come to terms with his own cruelty.
