The film tells the story of Nell (played by Marilyn Monroe), who finds a job taking care of guests' children at a hotel with the help of Uncle Eddie (played by Elisha Cook Jr.). Nell has always longed for a job, and expresses deep gratitude to Uncle Eddie. Despite her seemingly meek and obedient exterior, she is strongly attracted to jewelry and beautiful clothes. After caring for a little girl, Nell is deeply drawn to her employer’s jewelry and clothing. However, this scene is misunderstood by a pilot named Jed (played by Richard Widmark), who is having a spat with his girlfriend and sees Nell dancing gracefully across the window.
Later, Jed discovers that Nell has mental health issues, and Eddie tells him about her past: her boyfriend died in a plane crash, which caused her to go into a mental breakdown. After three years of hospital treatment, Nell has just been released, and her family hopes to help her adapt to a new environment by sending her to New York. Unfortunately, her condition has not improved, and she shows signs of misconduct and violent tendencies.
