The story begins with the storyteller being taken to the police station for causing a disturbance (played by Huang Zhan), where he narrates the life of the acclaimed Cantonese opera screenwriter, Nanhai Shisanlang, through his own experiences. As the thirteenth son of Jiang Taishi, Jiang Yuliao (played by Xie Junhao) lives a carefree and mischievous life among the elite. At a chance ball, he meets the wealthy Miss Lily (played by Wu Qili) from Shanghai; however, despite their connection, fate keeps them apart. Later, he follows her to Shanghai, only to find himself in dire straits. Two years later, he returns home to Guangdong, having been expelled from school. At that time, Taishi Gong was already quite old, and he spent his days watching performances. Initially unnoticed by the theater owner Xue Laowu, he eventually rises to prominence as the imperial playwright, earning the nickname - Nanhai Shisanlang. However, due to the tumultuous times, he travels to Jiangxi to write scripts to comfort soldiers at the frontlines. Disheartened by the vulgar works of his peers, he confronts them and leaves in anger. Shortly after, a car accident leads him to reunite with his former lover, but unfortunately, she has married a foreigner. Shisanlang, feeling despondent, later enters a temple to meditate, only to learn through a conversation while praying for others about his family's decline, driving him to madness…
