Larry Daley (played by Ben Stiller) seems to be having a tough time: he frequently changes jobs, is homeless; his wife has divorced him and is about to remarry a stockbroker, and his status in his son's eyes is also precarious. In order to save his life and to fight for custody of his son, Daley has to give up his dream of "doing big things" and becomes a night security guard at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Daley originally thought this would be a boring job, but on the very first day of work, something incredible happens: the pharaoh's gold medal in the museum possesses magical powers, and when night falls, all the exhibits come to life—T. rex chasing bones, mischievous monkeys, the brutal Huns, cavemen making fire... chaos ensues. With the help of President Teddy Roosevelt, Daley manages to regain control of the situation, but he soon faces new troubles: someone is plotting to steal the pharaoh's gold medal. Duty-bound, and for the sake of the museum's nighttime miracles, Daley must step up.
