In the winter of 1947, the Kuomintang army launched a focused attack on the East China Liberation Area. After achieving seven victories in seven battles in northern Jiangsu, our East China forces made a strategic retreat to completely annihilate the enemy. Initially, some soldiers couldn't understand the order. Captain Gao of a certain regiment led his troops to wait in Taocun, in the Yimeng Mountains. The villagers also had objections to the retreat.
To calm the emotions of the soldiers and villagers, Captain Gao and village head Zhao Yumin separately explained the higher-up's combat intentions. At that moment, the situation suddenly changed; the enemy thought our army was retreating and concentrated 300,000 troops to encircle us from three sides, intending to engage us in a decisive battle.
Our troops held off the enemy for six days and nights at the Dasha River near Taocun, then relocated to Phoenix Mountain to encircle the enemy's seven divisions led by General Li, who had been trapped by our forces. Captain Gao was ordered to ambush the enemy's reinforcements under General Zhang at Motian Ridge. After the battle at Phoenix Mountain, Captain Gao was again ordered to lead the vanguard to encircle the reinforcements.
Retreating south of the Dasha River, the enemy clung to resistance. Captain Gao took a shortcut to cross the Dasha River, cutting off the enemy's retreat route. The enemy planned to blow up the dam upstream of the Dasha River to use water to halt our forces. Zhao Yumin led a guerilla team to cut the fuses of the explosives at the dam, preserving it. Our army crossed the Dasha River and annihilated the enemy, capturing General Zhang and his chief of staff alive.
