Francesca Johnson (played by Meryl Streep) has passed away, leaving a will that requires her children to scatter her ashes on the Roseman Bridge. Confused, the children sift through their mother's belongings and uncover a touching romance from her past. One summer day in 1965, housewife Francesca sends off her husband Richard (played by Jim Haynie) and their children, and is left alone to attend to household chores. Photographer Robert Kincaid (played by Clint Eastwood) arrives by chance, asking her for directions to the Roseman Bridge. Her calm heart is stirred, and she leads him to the bridge. After finishing his work for the day, he thanks her with a bouquet of wildflowers and accepts her invitation to dinner. After he leaves early the next morning, she, reluctant to let go, returns to the Roseman Bridge and nails a note to the bridge, inviting him to dinner again. He accepts the invitation once more. The two meet at the Roseman Bridge, and the flames of love burn brightly in their hearts. He asks her to leave with him, but she cannot let go of her family and the conventional happiness she has. He leaves sadly. More than a decade later, Richard, who deeply loved Francesca, passes away. Three years later, she receives news of Robert's death. He has left most of his belongings to her and requests that his ashes be scattered on the Roseman Bridge.
