This film is adapted from the 1964 novel of the same name by American author Christopher Isherwood. The story takes place on November 30, 1962, in Los Angeles, California. Middle-aged English professor George Falconer (played by Colin Firth) is immersed in the shadow of the car accident death of his same-sex partner Jim (played by Matthew Goode), with whom he had shared his life for sixteen years, and he meticulously prepares to commit suicide. The film chronicles George's activities throughout one day, including his teaching, managing his relationship with student Kenny (played by Nicholas Hoult), and attending a private dinner with his old flame Charlotte (played by Julianne Moore). This film received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor (Colin Firth), nominations for Best Costume Design and Best Actor from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, nominations for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress (Julianne Moore) at the Golden Globes, as well as nominations for the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and Best Actor.
