Fulton (played by Charles Coburn) is an eccentric artist who has never married and has no descendants, living alone in a room at the Blythe family home. Once a penniless nobody, he fell in love with Mr. Blythe's mother, but unfortunately, they could not end up together. Now, in his old age, Fulton wishes to leave his fortune to this family but is unsure if his choice is correct. Therefore, he decides to give this family a little test. Fulton secretly gives the family a huge sum of $100,000, which delights Mrs. Blythe. She decides to use this money to improve their living conditions while encouraging her daughter Millicent (played by Piper Laurie) to dump her incompetent boyfriend Dan (played by Rock Hudson) and find a suitable husband.
