Two pairs of fathers and sons, estrangement and distance, communication and understanding, are unfolding in their lives. The son, Kenichi (played by Takahashi Koichi), is critically ill but refuses to have a final conversation with his father due to their poor relationship. The father, Takeda (played by Takakura Ken), rushes from Japan to Yunnan to fulfill his son's wish by filming the Nuo opera "A Ride Along the Miles" performed by Li Jiamin. After a long journey to Yunnan, Takeda struggles to communicate with the locals and learns that Li Jiamin is in prison for committing a crime. It turns out that Li Jiamin has his own heartbreaking past with his son, which led to his conviction. Takeda, after much effort, finds Li Jiamin in prison and asks him to perform. Unexpectedly, after hearing Takeda’s story about his son, Li Jiamin is reminded of the illegitimate son he abandoned, and he breaks down in tears halfway through the performance. Takeda decides to find his son in order to visit the prison, and during their journey, they share their feelings and take care of one another, fostering a deep bond. However, the emotional barrier between the son and Li Jiamin remains unbreakable. Just as Li Jiamin begins to sing again, Takeda receives a call informing him that his son has passed away with a smile, having forgiven him.
