The mining site where miner Casurin (played by Turo Pajala) works shuts down, forcing him to drive an old convertible Cadillac gifted by someone to Helsinki in search of new opportunities. A robbery on the way leaves him with only the Cadillac and a radio. Casurin finds temporary work as a dock laborer, but his main job remains uncertain. He meets Ilmelea, a worker at a slaughterhouse who has a son, and their lives quickly merge. However, Casurin is soon imprisoned for seeking revenge on the robbers. His cellmate Mikko carefully plans an escape, and with Ilmelea's help, Casurin regains his freedom. This film won the Best Actor Award at the 1989 Moscow International Film Festival and the FIPRESCI Prize, as well as the Best Foreign Language Film Award from the National Society of Film Critics in 1991. It is the second part of director Aki Kaurismäki's proletarian trilogy.
