The story takes place at the end of the 11th century, when Pope organizes a crusade to combat the Saracens who occupy the holy city of Jerusalem. Three passionate young men, Richard (played by Johannes Brandrup), Peter (played by Alessandro Gassman), and Andrew (played by Thure Riefenstein), join the crusade with the fervent desire to protect their homeland. Despite coming from different classes and having their own unknown pasts, they quickly become close friends on the battlefield, sharing life and death experiences. However, as time passes, the three young men begin to have different opinions on the atrocities committed by the crusaders. Ultimately, Andrew continues to follow the army, while Peter and Richard remain in Jerusalem.
