Rural girl Lu Xuezhi moves away from her hometown to live with her sister in the Greater Khingan Range. After diligently studying, she graduates from a forestry school and begins her career as a lumberjack. In the vast forest, where wild beasts roam, logging work is extremely tough. However, the stubborn Lu Xuezhi falls in love with everything here and is selected as a young assault team member. During her labor, Xuezhi falls in love with the earnest lumberjack Fang Genzhu, but her brother-in-law Lu Minzi strongly opposes their relationship and obstructs them. The brother-in-law wants to marry her off to a powerful civil officer, but Xuezhi firmly refuses. From then on, Xuezhi faces various difficulties such as not being able to get her work confirmed and not getting a marriage certificate. Fang Genzhu's mother and he try to appeal to Lu Minzi with money and gifts to facilitate the marriage, but are met with rejection. In anger, Xuezhi moves out of her sister's house, deeply disappointed in Genzhu's cowardice, and resolves to resist with her life, attempting to drown herself in the river. Fortunately, she is saved by Jiang Youlin, the secretary of the forestry bureau's youth league. When Jiang Youlin learns the situation, he seeks out Lu Minzi for an explanation, only to be mocked and criticized by some people. Lu Minzi, spouting nonsense and slandering Xuezhi, makes her feel utterly humiliated. The brother-in-law's arrogance and her fiancé's weakness leave Xuezhi feeling hopeless, and she decides to return to her hometown. Jiang Youlin explains the meaning of life to her, igniting her fighting spirit, and he tirelessly strives for Xuezhi's freedom to marry until he succeeds. On the eve of the wedding, Lu Xuezhi senses that there is a spiritual distance between her and Genzhu. She feels conflicted and pained, but still decides to commit herself. The loyal Genzhu also feels his own cowardice and does not want to burden Xuezhi, ultimately leaving without a word to join the firefighting efforts against a forest fire.
