In a remote little village called Podiyankulam in the southern part of Tamil Nadu, there exists a special tradition: whoever can leap from a cliff and slice a fish thrown across the river in half will be granted the "Village Sword"; those who accept this challenge but fail to cut the fish in half face execution by the villagers. In 1997, a young man named Karnan soared into the air and became the owner of the sword. Podiyankulam has long-standing grievances against its neighboring village Melur, as the former's residents come from a lower caste and have been oppressed for years. The story begins with a bus that refuses to pass through Podiyankulam. Under the political influence of the Melur villagers, multiple petitions from Podiyankulam asking for a bus stop in their village have been denied, forcing villagers to go to the Melur bus station to wait for transport, where they endure longstanding bullying and harassment from the Melur residents. After several incidents of the bus refusing to carry passengers, Karnan and other villagers smashed a bus that had denied a pregnant woman entry right in front of them. This action sparked much debate in a village council meeting, but ultimately the village chief decided that the entire village would stand together to protect Karnan and the others who stood up for their rights, confronting the police on their behalf. Following the bus being vandalized, the owner of the bus company and a group of police officers arrived in Podiyankulam to investigate. Under pressure from other villagers, the chief was forced to reveal the whereabouts of Karnan and others. However, considering business interests, the bus owner opted to withdraw the case without pursuing accountability. Yet, a police officer named Kannabiran was infuriated by the villagers' defiance—how could the son of a farmer dare to be called "Emperor"? He secretly vowed to teach Karnan a lesson. In the days that followed, police summoned the protesting villagers to the station for questioning. To protect Karnan, several elderly villagers volunteered to go to the station for reporting and signing. However, Kannabiran ruthlessly beat all the elders with a stick, gravely injuring them, and left them on the rooftop of the police station to suffer in the sun. After waiting outside the station for a day and a night, Karnan and others sensed the situation was adverse and stormed into the police station, rescuing his grandfather and several other elders, and wreaking havoc on the police station. After being humiliated again, Officer Kannabiran summoned more police forces to plan the village's destruction. Meanwhile, the villagers, upon the return of the elders, realized that the police's violence was not just due to the damaged bus but because they, as lower-caste farmers, stood tall when being questioned. Under Karnan's leadership, the entire village decided to rise up in retaliation. The police arrived as expected, but at that moment, Karnan had already set off to take on his military assignment, having received an acceptance letter, urged on by the village. Breaking through the villagers' resistance, the police entered every villager's home, looting and wreaking havoc. To protect a villager giving birth inside, Karnan's grandfather self-immolated and charged into the ranks of the violent police officers. Not far away, Karnan, wielding the Village Sword, galloped in. He used the sword to cut down several police officers and confined Officer Kannabiran in a room as a captive. Despite being captured, Kannabiran continued to insult Karnan, threatening him that if he harmed a hair on his head, the entire village would be flattened. Ultimately, Karnan beheaded Officer Kannabiran with a single stroke of his sword. This is a true story about honor, tradition, justice, and resilience.
