The film tells the story of a Chinese family whose grandmother is diagnosed with cancer, but the family chooses to hide this from her. Instead, they use the excuse of a wedding to bring everyone home to say their last goodbyes. However, Billie (played by Awkwafina), who grew up in New York, believes that it's her grandmother's right to know her own condition, leading to a clash of Eastern and Western cultural values within the Chinese family. The story is adapted from the real-life family experiences of director Lulu Wang, who was named one of Variety magazine's 2019 directors to watch because of this film.
