On March 18, 1943, 82 brave warriors from the 4th Company of the 19th Regiment of the 7th Brigade of the 3rd Division of the New Fourth Army fought in a blocking battle in Liu Laozhuang, Huaiyin, Jiangsu. In order to protect the safe transfer of the main forces and the party and government organs, they, as the weaker side with a disparate force, tenaciously resisted more than a thousand Japanese troops in more than ten attacks. Although all 82 officers and soldiers heroically sacrificed, they achieved a significant victory, inflicting over 170 Japanese casualties and more than 200 wounded. There were no high mountains or hills, no forests or swamps, and no tall buildings to obstruct the enemy. Under conditions of asymmetric force and weaponry, they achieved extraordinary results in an impossible situation, engaging in an unconventional battle. The 4th Company delayed the Japanese troops for over ten hours, successfully safeguarding the safe transfer of the local people and buying time for the strategic movements of the New Fourth Army leadership, main forces, and local anti-Japanese democratic government.
